About Us

askMID Insurance Check is an independent UK information service that helps drivers understand how vehicle insurance records work, and check the public data available on any vehicle.

What we do

We explain how to check whether a vehicle is insured on the Motor Insurance Database (MID), the central record maintained by the Motor Insurers' Bureau. We set out clearly which checks are free, which are paid, who is legally permitted to use each one, and what to do when a record appears to be wrong.

Alongside that guidance we provide a free vehicle lookup tool. Enter a registration number and you'll get MOT test history from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), together with registration and tax details from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), drawn from their official data services.

What we don't do

We do not hold, store, process or sell vehicle insurance data. Insurance status is not public information, and access to the Motor Insurance Database is restricted by law to the vehicle's own keeper and to people with a legitimate accident claim. Every insurance check is therefore completed on the official Motor Insurers' Bureau services, which we link to directly. We never display a vehicle's insurance status ourselves, and we would encourage caution towards any site that claims it can.

Independence

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Motor Insurers' Bureau, askMID, Navigate, DVSA or DVLA. We are an independent publisher. All organisation and service names are used for identification only and remain the property of their respective owners.

Our approach to accuracy

Rules, fees and penalties in this area change. We aim to state clearly where a figure is liable to change and to point you to the official source for confirmation rather than presenting a number as permanent. Where a vehicle record is delayed or incomplete at source, we say so rather than filling the gap with a guess.

If you find something on this site that is out of date or incorrect, please tell us at help@askmidinsuranceuk.com and we will review it.
